Museum-quality framing ensures the artwork is protected against deterioration caused by the passage of time, preserving it as unaltered as possible. Works on paper have many enemies: light, heat, humidity, air pollution, and even themselves (if the paper is not of high quality and pH-neutral, it can self-damage; likewise, the inks used in the work may be acidic and burn the paper over time).

Products used in conservation framing, such as boards, mats, adhesives, tapes, and others, must be acid-free (alkaline or neutral pH) to prevent damage to the works. The glass should have a UV filter. The frame should not be in direct contact with the mat board and mounting board. To prevent acid migration from the wood to the artwork, a protective barrier should be placed between the frame's rebate and the artwork.
